Summary:
On April 4, 1899, the third steamer named Rhode Island, with Captain McDonald in command, is struck by the Scully Towing Company tug, Joseph Stickney, with Capt. Miner in command. Rhode Island Mate Patrick Casey has a rescue boat in the Thames River within minutes and Simeon A. Chapman is soon rescued from the water. Capt. McDonald is rescued by the tugboat crew. Rhode Island returned to Noank's Robert Palmer shipyard, where she was built, for repairs and in 1917 was converted to a schooner for wartime use.
