Summary:
A fire, presumed to be started by a smoldering cigarette butt in a trash can, blazed through Mystic Seaport museum store, and threatened to destroy valuable paintings, ship models and art work. About 75 firefights from Mystic, Old Mystic, Quiambaug, Poquonnock Bridge and Noank fire companies, responded to the 8:26 a.m. call, battled the blaze, and had it under control by 9:52 a.m. While firefighters worked, Seaport employees shuttled in and out, saving artifacts, and virtually all were saved. There was extensive damage done to the building.
