Summary:
An extensive and detailed history of the church(es) of North Stonington, including its succession of pastors, and changes in membership due to various disagreements, as well as the effect of the Great Awakening in 1742. The body of the article consists of a presentation given by Mrs. George Wyman Tryon, who in turn relied upon the writings of Reverend Joseph Fish, a sermon by Rev. Myron Newton Morris, a history of the church prepared from church records by Rev. William B. Cary in 1887, and the 1905 church manual which contained a history written by Rev. E. J. Klock. Pastors discussed include Rev. Jabez Wight, Mr. Ebenezer Russell, and Rev. Joseph Fish, Rev. Joseph Ayer, Jr., Rev. Peter H. Shaw, and Philo Judson, Rev. Stephen Hubbell, Rev. Lavalotte Perrin, Rev. James R. Bourne, Rev. J.W. Savage, Rev. William B. Cary, Rev. Edwin Judson Klock, Rev. Frederick M. Hollister, and Rev. Oren D. Fisher. Discusses the influence of Separatist / Strict Congregationalist James Davenport (who convinced 2/3 of the church membership to leave Fish's church; some became Baptists and others formed their own church). Includes story recounted by Rev. Fish's grandson Prof. Benjamin Silliman, in which Benjamin Franklin's horse refused to go past the house of the pastor of the Road Church, Rev. Eels, thus "introducing" the two men who then became good friends. Also recounts the period of time when the church became intimately concerned with the morality of its members, even before they were church members, and meted out disciplinary actions as it felt appropriate, the particular example of Simeon Miner being discussed.
