Summary:
Steel steamer Commonwealth, giantess of the Sound, nicknamed "Mellen's boarding house", was hailed as world's largest sidewheeler when built in 1908. In a July fog in 1911, with 1,200 passengers on board, the sidewheeler collided with a smaller vessel, the James M. Gifford. The steamer Providence offers immediate assistance and the passengers (Elks) are rescued. Both vessels survive the crash.
