Summary:
Jim Streeter published a collection of his columns in a softbound volume called "Groton:Historical Bits and Pieces". He concentrated on "modern history", more recent events. It also includes a number of photographs and a sprightly store of anecdotes. The book opens with a discussion of the two Grotons, city and town. Jim is a lifelong resident of Groton and has served on both City and Town Councils, and was elected mayor of the Town of Groton on December 1st [2009]. There are articles about Electric Boat Corporation, including PT boats and the first submarines built in town wihich were, incidentally, not for the U.S. Navy. There is news about the haunting of New London Ledge Light and the mystery of the Fitch High School seal. There is news about the Resolute desk which sits in the Oval Office of the White House. There are heroic Navy divers, an eccentric museum keeper, run runners, poultry farmers, cigar manufacturers and sites like the Latham Memorial fountain and the Avery Memorial chapel.
