Summary:
Uncasville's Fort Shantok, site of a Mohegan Indian Fort and seat of their sachem Uncas, now provides people a well-kept historic state park. Adrian Block's map, published in 1614, shows that the Mohegans existed separately at that early date, although they were later subjected by the Pequots. Uncas retreated to Fort Shantok until the English under John Mason began their war against the Pequots in 1637. In 1645 Uncas and his warriors at Shantok were beseiged by their enemies, the Narragansetts. The seige was lifted by the bravery of Thomas Leffingwell who fed Uncas and his garrison. The memorial of his bravery was removed to the Mohegan Cemetery in 1923.
