Summary:
In 1839, the Spanish schooner Amistad, commanded by Capt. Fener, transported 60 African natives kidnapped from Lembobo. The Mendian speaking blacks are freed by African leader Joseph Cinque who attempts to force Ruiz and Montez to sail for Africa. Instead, they sail for a New London harbor where Capt. Gidney captures the Africans. A landmark decision in the U.S. Supreme Court determines whether the captives are Spanish slaves or African natives.
