Summary:
Milltown is now North Stonington. Edgar Wheeler wanted an academy of higher learning in his village of Milltown. When he died in 1888, his sister , Jennie, decided to fulfill his dream of a school for Milltown. It opened in 1889 for 12 pupils. Her brother Dwight organized the financial structure to support the school following her death. In 1901 a two-story granite structure was built with classroms on the first floor and a library on the second. Two dormitory cottages were added. This original school is now the town library. The modern Wheeler High School is adjacent.
