Summary:
Upon a recent sketching trip in North Stonington my attention was directed by some local nature lovers to a place called Lantern Hill. This locality in colonial days was used as a landmark at sea by marinersin the American navy and to this day used by fisherman in the vacinity of Noank and Fishers Island. To my disgust, progress had hit this place a foul blow, and across these imposing cliffs, engineers had blasted and cut an ugly railroad to reach a Silex mine far in the rear. Lantern hill has been forever disfigured.
