Summary:
The March 10, 1909 fog was a record-breaker and caused the 375 foot steamer Massachusetts, Scott's tug Tasco and the British bark Ladysmith to have to be rescued. Two other steamers, the H. F. Dimock and the Portland steamer, collided in the narrow channel of Pollack Rip Slue. During WWI the Navy acquired the Massachusetts and renamed her Shawmut using her as a minelayer in the North Sea. In 1928 she was rechristened Oglala and was sunk at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese sneak attack. Refloated and repaired, designated ARG-1, the vessel saw action in the Central Pacific before being decommissioned in 1946.
