Summary:
Whaling Captains S.O. Budington and John Orrin Spicer developed great respect for the native Eskimos. Americans were fascinated with these people who lived in the barren northern wastes. Unfortunately these visitors usually had tragic endings. They had no immunity to the usual New England diseases. The Starr Burial Ground holds the headstones of a number of these victims of New England living. In the case of Eskimo John Bull, who testified for John O. Spicer, his tribe feared his new knowledge when he returned to Greenland and they killed him.
