Summary:
Saybrook's sand bar was a formidable obstacle to vessels leaving or entering the long tidal river and kept Saybrook from becoming a port to rival New London, New Haven and New York. In 1773 residents held a lottery to raise money to fix buoys that helped to mark safe navigation into and out of the river. In 1802 a small piece of land was purchased from William Lynde as a site for the Lynde Point lighthouse and in 1875 Congress appropriated funds for dreding and jetties. In 1886, another lighthouse, nicknamed the Outer Light began service.
