When the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center displayed Native American quilts Carol Kimball was surprised. She had not seen American Indian quilts. Early 20th century women of many tribes stiched quilts for the use of family members only. They were never sold. In 1984, Michigan State University begain a native quilting research project and in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution and an exhibition was mounted. The show's signature quilt, used on the exhibit poster, entitled Indian Boyas and Girls, was made in 1996 by the Senior Seqing Club at Tsali Manor, the senior citizen center in Cherokee, N.C.
