Summary:
07/06/2009 Norwich's 350th anniversary contained exhibit devoted to Sarah L. Huntington Smith, a Norwich native and distinguished educator at home and abroad. She was born 1802, daughter of wealthy Deacon Jabez Huntington and began a Sabbath School for the Mohegan Indian village in 1827. In 1833 she met the Rev. Eli Smith from the Syrian mission field. They married in Norwich and went to the Middle East in 1834 where she worked to improve the status of Muslim women with a school in Syria. The Lebanese American University is an outgrowth of her school. She died in Smyrna Sept. 30, 1836 and is buried half a world away. The Mohegan Congregational Church still serves the tribe and the neighborhood and they recall her good works. No photos in article except for standard photo of Carol Kimball.
