Summary:
The USS Union, a Civil War steamer built by Charles Mallory at Mystic, was launched Aug. 9, 1862. Mallory sold her to the New York firm of L. L. Hargous for $75,000. On Jan. 6, 1863, Rear Adm. Hiram Paulding bought her for the navy for $190,000 and she was commanded by Lt. Edward Conroy. When the war ended she was sold to the Atlantic Mail Steamship Company for $30,500 and renamed Missouri. She caught fire off Abaco Island in the Bahamas on Oct. 20, 1872.
