Summary:
Dr. Seth Smith, who died in 1878, left a large amount of money to be used as funding for a home for elderly women in New London. His heirs objected and the lawsuit lasted for six years until finally plans for the home were allowed to go ahead. The first site for the home was the Congdon property, which served as the Smith Memorial Home until 1932 when the location was moved. The home closed in August 1990, and a trust fund was established in its place.
