Summary:
Steamboat journeys were not always peaceful as passengers on the sidewheeler New England, along with captain Waterman, found out in 1833. Her copper boilers exploded without serious injury to any aboard ship. Within a year she was repaired and continued in service until May 31, 1838 when she collided with the steamer Curlew and sank to the bottom off Boon Island, Maine.
