The story of the "Buddingtons", one of Groton's early families, begins with Walter "Bodington" and his brother's son, also named Walter, who settled in Stonington in 1668, moved to New London and then to Groton about 1679. Westport, Connecticut resident Richard Walter Nielson, an eleventh-generation Buddington, gathered and compiled his family's history into a 830 page book. The Buddingtons made their living from the sea and included many famous sea captains. Nielson's book offers rich maritime history and is valuable to genealogists with special sections and illustrations about the Polaris and Resolute.
