Summary:
The author of this article became interested in the story of Abigail Hinman after buying a pitcher featuring Hinman holding a musket. After years of wondering, the author found a book which included more information about Abigail Hinman. According to the book, her husband, Capt. Elisha Hinman was away at sea when Benedict Arnold burned New London in 1781. There are two stories mentioned in the article with different details, but both say that Mrs. Hinman was attempting to shoot Benedict Arnold, who she knew personally, but for whatever reason, the gun did not go off. The art on the pitcher was painted several decades later in 1854.
