Summary:
The Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce reminds us an accurate census is important to ensure that all communities get their fair share of government funding. Census taking is nothing new and was carried on by the ancient Hebrews and the Romans for levying taxes and for military conscription. Census information also provides statistical information about the population that is important under the Constitution of the United States in terms of representation and direct taxes. Census records are helpful to genealogists but today's brief census information content as compared to the census information of the 1900s will never reveal family secrets such as a cousin who worked in a silk mill.
