Summary:
Screw propellers were designed by J. W. Miller of the Providence and Stonington line for the twin steamers Maine and New Hampshire about 1898. Touted to be more economical & comfortable, faster and safer than the old sidewheelers, the Maine arrived at Stonington in 1892. She was to meet her Nemesis in 1920.
