Summary:
Chapman Tech High School is no more, absorbed by New London High about 1953, but the Chapman Tech Alumni Association just held its 26th annual reunion. Carol Kimball was a member of the class of 1933. She was a freshman in 1929, the beginning of the Great Depression. Waterford, Montville, Salem and East Lyme had no High School so they went to Bulkeley for boys, Williams Memorial Institute for girls or Chapman Tech. Carol remembers choosing Chapman because it had boys and girls and was a no nonsense school. The principal was Frederick S. Hitchcock. Each day began with a hymn, accompanied on the piano by Beatrice Hatton Fisk. There were no lockers. The school was crowded. Two classes were held in opposite ends of the auditorium. Jack Smith taught Ancient History. Mr. Coons taught English. There were Latin classes but no study periods. There was no lunch room, they ate in the auditorium or outdoors in good weather. The faculty was impressive and included: Jack Conway, George Perry, Pauline Azbell, Willis Umberger and Howard Wardwell. The basketball team worn a championship in 1932-33. They had a great football team but no cheerleaders and no band. Their archrival was Bulkeley. Some of her classmates were Al Lundwall, Johnny Kamiercia and Morris Pesanti Perry. They got a great education.
