Summary:
Captain James Cook's bark Endeavour may have been found by marine archaeologist D.K. Abbass near Newport harbour. A glimpse of Cook's biography includes his command of a converted Whitby collier known as The Earl of Pembroke renamed The Endeavour Bar or the Endeavour. The bark was refitted and later sold for use as a transport and renamed Lord Sandwich and she brought German mercenaries to America during the Revolution but in Newport in 1778 a prison ship named Lord Sandwich was scuttled in Newport harbor as French naval forces approached.
