Summary:
The USS Hartford, a sloop of war, was launched Nov. 22, 1858, at the Boston Navy Yard. The Hartford, with 60 year old Flag Officer, David Farragut at her helm, would obtain many Civil War victories for the Union. Farragut was made a rear admiral after his victory at New Orleans and is credited with first uttering the oft quoted, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" The USS Hartford ended her days in the early 20th century as a naval training ship.
