Summary:
Inspired by Jules Verne, Simon Lake, born in New Jersey in 1867, was a submarine building rival of John Holland. Of the two, J.P. Holland Torpedo Boat Company, which evolved into the Electric Boat Company, became the century's leading submarine builder. But the Lake Torpedo Boat Company, which went out of business in 1924, produced some 32 submarines for the navy.
