Summary:
Fort Hil in Groton has a rich history. From this site Pequot Sachem Sassacus viewed the 1637 flames from the Pequot fort in Mystic which was destroyed by John Mason's troops and the Mohegans led by Uncas. Thirty years later Pequot Sachem Robin Cassasinamon, a friend of John Winthrop Jr., and a few Pequots returned to Fort Hill but the village was not prosperous and the Indians left. The next prominent resident of Fort Hill was Baptist preacher Elder Silas Burrows whose farmhouse still stands there even though the Second Baptists relocated to Mystic. Eva Butler led a Groton group to build a small museum on Fort Hill property deeded to the town from the Merritt farm but it was removed in 1978.
