Michael H. Cottman's book, "The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie" (Harmony Books, 1999) subtitled, "An African-American's Spiritual Journey to Uncover a Sunken Slave Ship's Past" records the history of an uncommon maritime disaster. Captain Moe Molinar, of the salvage boat Virgalona, discovered the wreck July 19, 1973 about 37 miles west of Key West and 90 miles north of Havana. On November 15, 1992, the National Association of Black Scuba Divers dedicated an underwater monument at the site of the wreck of the Henrietta Marie, " .. in recognition of the courage, pain and suffering of enslaved African people…".
