Summary:
A house presented to James Avery Jr. and Debora Stallion about 1670 becomes legendary landmark in Groton, called the Hive of the Averys. On July 20, 1894 a fire claims the structure owned by Town Clerk of Groton, James Denison Avery (related to John D. Rockefeller), and the town records kept in the home, for there was no town hall, were also destroyed in the fire. An Avery memorial is maintained in Groton and The Avery Memorial Association maintains cleared area by the railroad tracks in Poquonnock where Hive of the Averys once stood.
