Summary:
In his publication, "Picturesque Rhode Island," Wilfred H. Munro noted Westerly mined its wealth via granite that set the international standard for density, polish, color and beauty. The industry began in 1845 when Orlando Smith of Smith Grantie Company discovered granite near what became Tower Street. George Ledward and later on, J.G. Batterson, operated a second quarry, the Rhode Island Granite Works. Stephen W. Macomber, in his booklet entitled, "The Story of Westerly Granite" recorded his recollections of the industry.
