Summary:
Early submarines were developed to meet wartime needs and during the Civil War, the Confederates employed a novel weapon that was not a true submarine, but was a vessel that played its part in underwater warfare: small torpedo boats known as "Davids". The first David was financed by Theodore S. Stoney and Charleston residents organized a subnarine torpedo corps led by engineering Capt. F.D. Lee.
