Summary:
Quaker Hill was a Hill but had little to do with the Quakers. James Rogers, one of New London's early settlers, once owned the southern half of Quaker Hill and his son, John, founder of the Rogerene sect, had a home near the present Benham Avenue. Robert Bachman's recent booklet on Waterford history says the area was named Quaker Hill in derision by Rogers' detractors, who likened him to the early ranting Quakers of Massahusetts.
