Summary:
Across the lake from us, on a wooded point of land, we found an old Indian graveyard. In 1637, the Pequot nation terrorized all of Connecticut, and the whites organized against them. Gen. John Mason marched with 77 englishmen and attacked 700 Pequots in a fort near Mystic. The Indians made the military mistake of building round or circular forts, with only two narrow entrances. They did not kill the Indians fast enough, Mason set the dry wigwams on fire. This event is known as the Mystic Massacre. There is now a monument erected by by the state of CT in honor of John Mason, "the savior of the state". White people believe that this was a patriotic act. The Pequots refer to Johnny Mason as the meanest old man.
