Summary:
Store-bought dresses never came with home made bloomers and that, perhaps, was what Carol Kimball liked the most about those dresses which never had the quality and endurance of her mother's home-made garments. Despite the Butterick and Pictorial Review patterns and the Singer foot-powered treadle her mother used, peer pressure won out, and Carol finally managed to get a store-bought dress, like those sold at MacArthurs, Hislops and the Bee Hive, via her Aunt Ethel Bolles.
