Frederic Bill was born Sept. 7, 1833 in Groton although his birthplace now stands in Ledyard. A philanthropist, he left the town two substantial landmarks, the Bill Memorial Library and Groton Heights School. Frederic Bill, who established Groton's Bill Memorial Library in honor of his sisters, once lived in a mansion at the current site of the Amerada Hess Corp. oil terminal at 443 Eastern Point Road
