Summary:
Mahogany Sea Sled runabouts and cruisers were built at West Mystic in the 1920s and they could travel 42 noisey miles per hour. Albert Hickman, who invented the Sea Sled, started production at Pictou, Nova Scotia but Sea Sled Ltd. was located at West Mystic, about 1917, at the old Maxson and Fish shipyard. By 1928 business was so good Sea Sled expanded, using another yard on the Thames River, the old Groton Iron Works. The bulk of the business was the production of pleasure boats and the stock market crash brought all this prosperity to an end. The firm went bankrupt about 1933 but lately there's been a revival of interest in this type of boat.
