Summary:
The three-masted Niantic built in 1835, Niantic, built in 1835 for the China trade and later demoted to whaling, was built by Thomas Child at Catham, now called Portland, for the New York firm of Nathaniel and George Griswold. In March of 1849, after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill on Jan. 24, 1848, Capt. Cleveland prepared the ship for passage to California but after the great fire of 1851, her owners timbered over the hull to make the foundation of a new hotel - Niantic House.
