Summary:
Charles Francis Hall, an engraver of limited means from Cincinnati, intrigued by accounts of the 1845 lost party of Arctic explorers lead by Sir John Franklin of England, set out from New London on the bark "George Henry" to find survivors. He spent two years living with the Eskimos of Baffin Land, then returned to New London with two of them (Tookoolito and Ebierbing). In 1864, H.R. Chappell of New London offered the three free passage back on board the whaling brig Monticello. Hall spent five years exploring and living off the land before returning and convincing Congress to fund a third expedition, with S.O. Buddington of Groton as sailing master, and Hubbard C. Chester of Noank as first mate.
