Summary:
Winters of the past are remembered as having more snow than today's (1989) winters, …"a premise borne in the Preston Historical Society, Nine Dollars and Board, the memoirs of Lewis R. Peckham." Old timers packed the snow on roads rather than clearing them for automobiles and enjoyed games such as sleigh races and horse races. Many walked and those who drove used candles to melt the ice on their car's windshield. Some of the big storms were Jan. 18, 1857, Jan. 17, 1867, 1889, and Feb. 8, 1905.
