Summary:
President George Washington was born February 11, but twenty years later the British adopted the Georgian calendar adding 11 days to the date and now February 22 is observed as Washington's birthday. One tangible relic of the Washington bicentennial celebrations is a bronze plaque moved to a spot adjacent to a neighboring doughnut shop in Groton. It commemorates Washington's first visit to New London.
