Summary:
Privateers, privately owned vessels occupied in the American Revolution and other wars, deserve to be remembered. They were not pirate ships. They were bonded and carried government sanction. New London produced many successful privateer captains: Elisha Hinman of the Deane, Charles Bulkeley of the Active, Thomas Allon of the General Putnam and Dudley Saltonstall of the Minerva. Groton had Thomas and John Park, Thomas Chester, William Leeds and Eliphalet Buddington.
