If an individual became ill or destitute, the town was financially responsible for the person. Typically, the town would guarantee to pay for any unforeseen expenses for a period of one year if one of its citizens moved to another town. These certificates are part of the Eva Butler Manuscript Collection. Note that transcribed names are spelled exactly as they appear on the certificate.
